General information about Coronavirus 

The main symptoms of coronavirus are:

  • a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)
  • a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)
  • a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal

What to do if you have symptoms
If you have any of the main symptoms of coronavirus:

  • Get a test to check if you have coronavirus as soon as possible.
  • You and anyone you live with should stay at home and not have visitors until you get your test result – only leave your home to have a test.
    Anyone in your support bubble should also stay at home if you have been in close contact with them since your symptoms started or during the 48 hours before they started.

Useful information for patients 

Please  DO NOT enter your GP practice without a pre-booked face-to-face appointment.

If you feel unwell, you should complete an online form on your local surgery website (eConsult) or call your surgery in the first instance. If you complete an eConsult, you’ll get a response by the end of the next working day.

All patients are still being triaged remotely, this means you will have to speak to someone in the practice before you are given an appointment. The surgery will ask you for information about your health concern so you can get the help you need. This also enables surgeries to prioritise appointments for patients most in need and also stop any unnecessary visits to surgeries.

You must inform your practice if you or someone in your household has symptoms of Coronavirus or has tested positive for Coronavirus.

Appointments are being delivered in new ways such as by telephone and video call to reduce the number of people visiting surgeries. However, if your surgery thinks it is appropriate for you to have a face-to-face appointment,  please be reassured all the necessary measures are in place to protect patients and staff. Surgeries are using social distancing measures, staff are wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and surgeries are cleaned to Public Health England standards.

If you are asked to attend a face-to-face appointment, please do not go into the building until the time of your appointment and please remember you must wear a face covering. If your complaint is non-urgent,  please complete an eConsult form on your practice website. Please remember your practice is only open from 8am to 6:30pm Monday to Friday and so it may be a day or so before you get a reply, but your practice will reply to you after they have reviewed your request.

Information about medicines

Repeat prescriptions

If you have a regular prescription, please help reduce pressure on local GP practices and community pharmacies by following the advice below. This will also help ensure there are enough medicines for everyone who needs them.

  • Please DO NOT go into your surgery to order a repeat prescription. Repeat prescriptions can be ordered online via your surgery website or through the NHS App. If you are not able to go online, please contact your surgery who will advise how you can order your medicines.
  • Please DO NOT request extra quantities of your medication or order your prescription before your usual due date. GPs will not authorise issue of extra medications.

Accessing paracetamol to treat Coronavirus symptoms

Paracetamol can be used to treat symptoms of Coronavirus which include a high temperature or a new, continuous cough.

However, if you think you have Coronavirus symptoms, DO NOT go into your local pharmacy or supermarket to purchase paracetamol. It is vital you follow NHS guidance and self-isolate.

Please try to buy paracetamol as part of your supermarket delivery or ask someone to purchase it on your behalf and drop it off at your home (observing social distancing guidance). You can also contact your local pharmacy by telephone who will be happy to advise.

Please do not contact your GP for a prescription.
