The 14th November marks World Diabetes Awareness day. Across the Runcorn and Widnes areas (Halton CCG) 8279 people are estimated to have diabetes (8% of the registered population). 90% of these people have type 2 diabetes and a further 11,595 people in Halton are at high risk of developing diabetes.
The number of people with diabetes is increasing across the UK, and this is set to continue in line with trends in obesity and an ageing population. Diabetes UK (a charity who supports people with diabetes) report that 80 per cent of cases could be prevented.
